Never accept cigarettes from Speirs !

------------------------------------------

Lieutenant Colonel Ronald C. Speirs is a character from Band of Brothers (portrayed by Matthew Settle) but he was above all a real WWII paratrooper.

Among the men of Easy Company, there were rumors that he gave cigarettes to 20 Nazi POWs, and later shot all but one. He was also said to have shot a drunk Sergeant. He neither denies these, nor confirms them.

------------------------------------------

Speirs : You wanna know if they're true or not, the stories about me? Did you ever notice with stories like that, everyone says they heard it from someone who was there. Then when you ask that person, they say they heard it from someone who was there. It's nothing new, really. I bet if you went back two thousand years, you'd hear a couple centurions standing around yakkin' about how Tertius lopped off the heads of some Carthaginian prisoners.

Lipton : Well, maybe they kept talking about it because they never heard Tertius deny it.

Speirs : Maybe that's because Tertius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest son of a bitch in the whole Roman Legion.

This piece shows an interesting perspective. The Nazi's would give the prisoners of the concentration camps the ability to buy cigarettes and smoke them before the prisoners were killed. This offers an interesting perspective because Speirs is doing to what most people would find a friendly action of offering one's cigarettes to another. Yet we find out that in the description that he then later killed all 20 but one of the Nazi POW who he gave cigarettes. So this piece offers yet another view of "an eye for an eye" which is a truly debatable yet recognized subject commonly found in all forms of media. This gives us a glimpse back in time and lets us wonder about if that idea should still apply during war, especially to the POWs. We can empathize with both Speirs and the Nazi POWs because of the situation we learn about from the description. As just the painting itself, without the description, you see it as a friendly gesture from a soldier. His gaze appears to be friendly, yet the artist captured the amazing expression of hate as well in the face and lips. You get the feeling that he is offering the cigarette not as a friendly action, but as a test. This truly captures the expression and minds of the soldiers, in this case, confronting a Nazi POW.

First off, smoking kills (no in this case it literally kills)

Oddly though, I enjoy this picture - but I'm kinda of disappointed that you've almost completely covered his eyes - oh well :S

I do however like the detail you have in the cigarettes and his hand, I feel almost as if this picture could be 3D and the hand could be poking out if the screen offering to anyone dumb enough to take one.

I like the contradiction of his offering and his eyes/facial expression, his stuck out hand seems so inviting, but his face is showing the express of "you fuck with me and I'll kill you" I'd be the kinda a person that would take a second glance before turning down his, kind, offer.

Overall though, I like the expression and the "daring" to take one :) (the story behind it you posted below also helps)

I saw this image, didn't read the caption or anything, and immediately knew which scene this was, lmao XD
Amazing job, true artist, with great taste in tv mini series ^.~
I'm a big Band of Brothers fan~ <33
By the way, I'm pretty sure Speirs originated in D Company, but was moved to E Company after Bastogne

This is beyond GODLIKE! This is just very amazing. I'm a big fan of World War II on national geographic and history channel. That's why I wanted to join French Foreign Legion, though I wasn't capable because of health reasons.

Damn this art is just really awe-inspiring. It's like it's recruiting me!!! :squee:

Uncle Sam wants you! I mean me. :XD:
You have a really great talent!
